A. Callicoon Hills is a sweet, new Catskills retreat which opened in June in New York’s booming Hudson Valley. The century-old boardinghouse was renovated by the team at Post Company, who set out to create a getaway that conserves the local, old-school camp-culture, yet upgraded with higher-end design and amenities. The property features 65 charming rooms, a pool, a lake, a coffee shop and a New American-meets-German bar/restaurant named Conover Club which is open to the general public.
B. New York’s The Carlyle has reopened its main restaurant with a new name, new chef and new menu. Dowling’s at The Carlyle, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, pays homage to New York of yesteryear. It’s new chef Sylvain Delpique (of the now-shuttered 21 Club) has designed an interactive menu full of dramatic flair including salt-crusted branzino filleted tableside, a carving station for prime rib, steak Diane, which is set on fire with a pour of cognac at the flambe station, and flaming Grand Marnier sundae.
C. Gucci has unveiled its “Gucci Circolo” pop-up in London’s Shoreditch neighborhood. The impressively fashionable space offers visitors the chance to discover Gucci’s special collections, such as the ‘Gucci100’, which is currently showcased in celebration of the brand's centenary. The space also features a book store containing rare art books and limited-edition Gucci books (all curated by publisher Idea), a listening lounge, and a Gucci Café. Check it out now before the space converts again on November 15 to celebrate the launch of the Hacker Project collection, a Gucci/ Balenciaga collaboration.
D. Through January 9, London’s Barbican is exhibiting over 150 works of famed Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. His first touring retrospective in Europe for 20 years, the exhibit displays sculptures (of stone, ceramics, wood and aluminum), as well as playground models, furniture, lighting and theatre set design.
E. After years of delay, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles finally welcomed its first guests on September 30. The museum is an immersive experience into the world of film, including the many stories behind their art, technology, history, and social impact. The $482M build out by Renzo Piano included the renovation of the Saban building and construction of a concrete and glass sphere which houses the 1,000 seat David Geffen movie theater.
F. From the team behind the Shanghai outpost of Parisian nightclub Le Baron, GRNDCNTRL opened last month in the heart of Shanghai’s Xintiandi neighborhood. A modern mega-club, GRNDCNTRL features private rooms and suites, VIP tables, a kinetic light system, and an 26-foot long bar. An all-night getaway, guests can enjoy classic Shanghai bites for dinner, throw down some imaginative mixology creations at the bar, then dance the night away enjoying tableside bottle service. Next door to the main room there is a small secret club called CONTRAST with an LED screen ceiling that will play techno and house music.
G. A new Edition hotel will debut next month in downtown Reykjavík by the Old Harbor port. The building was designed in partnership with local architecture firm, T.ark and New York-based studio Roman and Williams with the guidance of Ian Schrager Company. The hotel features 253-rooms, a restaurant, bar, and underground nightclub called Sunset. Across from Sunset sits the spa which features a hammam, steam room, sauna, plunge pool and social lounge that will serve beverages such as post-workout Viking shakes, champagnes and moss vodka infusions.
