AUGUST ‘21
A. It’s not often that a new luxury hotel pops up on the Amalfi Coast - especially one with a private beach. July’s opening of Borgo SantAndrea was just that rare occasion. With 29 rooms and 26 suites that all feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sea, the property offers stunning vistas from its perch 90 meters above the sea.
B. Experimental Group will oversee a full renovation of Gran Hotel Montesol, a 33-room property located near Ibiza’s historic Dalt Vila neighborhood. Dubbed a UNESCO Property of Cultural Interest, the hotel, which opened in 1933, was used by the Spanish government as a military barracks during the Spanish Civil War and World War II, and has housed high-profile figures since its opening. The first part of the property’s transformation was the redesign of the hotel’s new restaurant Sabbaba Montesol, by French designer Dorothée Meilichzon. Opened last month, the eatery offers diners seating inside, on the terrace, and on the hotel’s rooftop, showcasing views of Ibiza old town. The hotel rooms are set to be refurbished in 2022.
C. Last month, L'Atelier De Joël Robuchon opened up its newest location on Saint Barths. The Art Deco restaurant offers front row seats of the Caribbean Sea along Gustavia Harbor. Take a spot at the 34-seat counter or 16 tables, for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, or dinner, and watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen preparing Robuchon’s traditional recipes.
D. The Mies Van Der Rohe building which houses Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie has just completed a 6.5 year renovation. The David Chipperfield Architects led project completely disassembled the structure into 35,000 pieces in order to add modern systems for sustainability and efficiency. Reopened on August 22nd, the museum prominently features Alexander Calder’s Têtes et Queue in the outdoor courtyard, where the art piece was originally installed for the museum’s 1968 opening.
E. For a special culinary experience in Paris, reserve a spot at Twenty-Two Club, a 22-seat supper club which welcomed its first guests this month. Located in a private home with a dining room overlooking the treetops of Palais Royale, Twenty Two Club is currently serving a vegetable-forward tasting menu and wine pairing by the team behind acclaimed Parisian restaurant Verjus.
F. Also in Paris, there are still a couple of weeks left to check out Hôtel de Crillon's “beach terrace”, a summer pop-up experience created by new sister property Rosewood Le Guanahani in Saint Barths. The Concorde terrace has been outfitted with decorative lights and lively colors to create a Caribbean-esque atmosphere. Pastry Chef Matthieu Carlin serves refreshing goodies to help break the summer heat, such as home-made ice creams, frozen cookies, and fruity drinks on ice.
G. One of our favorite New York City chefs, Ignacio Mattos (of Estela and Altro Paradiso), will open a new bakery and cafe at Rockefeller Center on September 13. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Lodi will serve refined Italian fare and aperitivo, offering a “quietly indulgent” eating experience. The restaurant produces freshly milled flour and daily baked breads, used to craft menu items such as cornetti, panini, babà al rum and cookies.
H. On September 15, Casa Cipriani will debut in NYC's Financial District as a hotel and member's club. For the project's development, a steel and glass addition (which is only visible from the East River via boat) was added to the top of the 112-year old Beaux Arts-style ferry terminal structure. The hotel will feature 47 hotel suites with private balconies overlooking the New York Harbor.
